BookUp setup and product-mapping guide
Connect Google Calendar, add booking blocks to your theme, and give products, services, staff and rooms the right booking rules.
Connect your calendar
Open BookUp in Shopify admin and connect Google Calendar. Choose the store or default booking calendar from the calendars you can write to. Basic uses one calendar for the store; Standard supports calendar assignments. Without a Google connection, the widget collects date and time selections on cart/order lines only: it does not check availability, reserve time or create events.
Set your default Booking rules
- In Booking rules, choose a day or time selector and Single or Range selection.
- Choose the starting view, booking window and the first day of the week.
- For time bookings, set opening and closing hours and Time interval. The interval controls spacing between possible start times, not the appointment length.
- Save your changes. Products inherit these rules unless their product mapping has a custom booking setup.
Add BookUp to your theme
- Go to Online Store → Themes and open the theme editor for the theme you use.
- Open the relevant product template or a page with a Featured product section. Choose the featured product in that section if needed.
- In that product section, choose Add block → Apps → BookUp → Booking calendar. Place it beside the product’s buy buttons and adjust its appearance.
- Optionally add Booking fields in the same section and enable the customer fields you need. Turn on Show submit button inside Booking fields if you want requests without checkout. Keep the theme’s buy buttons for paid bookings; you can offer both flows.
- Save the theme. If you created a separate product template, assign it to the intended products in Shopify.
Use an Online Store 2.0 theme with a product section that supports app blocks. Collection grids, recommendation grids and standalone Apps sections are not supported booking placements. Calendar and fields blocks must belong to the same product section.
Configure Product mappings
- Open Product mappings in BookUp, click Add product mapping and choose your Shopify product.
- Under Booking setup, leave “Use the default booking setup from Booking rules.” checked to inherit the defaults. Uncheck it only when this product needs its own selector, selection mode, starting view or limits.
- Under Calendar destinations, choose Whole product — one calendar and working hours, or select a product option such as Staff or Room to configure each option value separately. Separate calendar destinations require Standard; Basic uses the store booking calendar.
- Choose the Event calendar, opening and closing times, unavailable weekdays and Time interval for each destination. Leave Time interval empty to use the inherited interval.
- For time bookings, use Appointment lengths to choose Whole product — one appointment length, or select an option such as Service or Hours and enter a duration for each value. Enter 2 for two hours or 00:30 for thirty minutes. Whole hours are formatted as 02:00 when saved; durations use five-minute steps, up to 24 hours.
- Save, then test every relevant variant on the storefront. Changing a service should update its appointment length; changing staff or room should use the assigned calendar and working hours.
Create the product options and variants in Shopify before mapping them. For example, a barber product could have Staff and Service options: Staff chooses the calendar, while Service chooses the appointment length.
Example: choose a start time for a longer appointment
For a product with 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours variants, select Time selector and Single selection. In Appointment lengths, map the Hours option to 01:00, 02:00 and 03:00. Set the destination’s Time interval to 01:00.
A customer can choose the two-hour variant and a 09:00 start; the appointment is 09:00–11:00. The one-hour interval still offers hourly starts. BookUp only offers starts where the whole appointment fits within working hours and does not overlap a booking.
If 12:00–13:00 is booked, a three-hour appointment cannot start at 10:00, 11:00 or 12:00. A 09:00–12:00 appointment can still fit because it ends when the existing booking begins.
How BookUp chooses the calendar and price
The theme block automatically identifies its product section. You do not need to register its template on a separate rules page. Basic uses the store booking calendar. On Standard, the product or staff/room calendar selected in Product mappings takes priority; otherwise BookUp uses the default calendar on the main page.
Prices come from the selected Shopify product variant. Appointment lengths and start-time intervals are configured separately in Product mappings and Booking rules. The storefront’s price-per-unit label follows the selected booking unit; range bookings use the corresponding quantity. There is no separate base-rate variant to choose.
Test your booking flow
- Open the storefront outside the theme editor and select each service or staff variant you configured.
- Choose a date and start time. Confirm that the displayed end time matches the appointment length and that busy periods cannot be selected.
- For paid bookings, add the appointment to cart, check its Booking time and complete a test checkout using your store’s test-payment setup. Paid booking events are created after verified payment.
- For booking requests, fill in Booking fields and use its submit button, then check the confirmation and calendar event. Requests create bookings without checkout according to your settings.
- Check the destination calendar, event time and any approval behavior you enabled.
Theme-editor previews help you check appearance; they do not create live bookings. For help, email Aoloha with the product and the setting you need help with.
